Case Studies

Social Security Administration

The Social Security Administration (SSA) and MedVirginia launched the first production use of the eHealth Exchange in February 2009. It was a monumental effort that was made possible by extraordinary commitment of all those involved. To fully document the impact of this work, an independent case study was commissioned by the SSA to evaluate the impact of electronic data exchange on disability claim determinations. The Kay Center for E-Health Research completed the analysis of this project and found that the average length of time to complete the disability determination process was reduced from 84 days to 46 days with MedVirginia. Bon Secours Richmond, the health system involved in this study, experienced a $2 million annual revenue enhancement as a result of the improvement in process, providing concrete evidence that doing the right thing for the patient can also produce financial benefit to the provider as well.
