MedVirginia Solution, Connecting the Community
MedVirginia, Virginia's Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO), launched MedVirginia Solution, a Health Information Exchange (HIE), in the fall of 2005. MedVirginia Solution collects hospital, lab and pharmacy data and organizes it into one single electronic chart. MedVirginia Solution is the only one of its kind in Virginia, integrating clinical data from the community into one patient-centric electronic chart. Providers have access to critical patient information from multiple sources as soon as results are available. Additionally, providers find value in decision support tools such as drug interaction alerts.
Since its inception in 2001, the vision of MedVirginia is to be the most electronically connected medical community in the United States. The goal is for providers to share clinical information across a secure on-line provider portal resulting in improved quality of care, patient safety and practice efficiency. The launch of Solution takes MedVirginia significantly toward this vision. Because this data is accessed through a HIPAA compliant, on-line portal, the only requirement is a PC and Internet connectivity.
Bon Secours Richmond Health System is the initial sponsor and data supplier for MedVirginia Solution. There is no cost to providers to access their patient's clinical data. Additional services are available on a subscription basis, including electronic health records, electronic prescribing, integration of practice notes and integration with practice management systems.
